sony just can’t get it right…

Engadget had a link to a study that seems to confirm my feelings on Sony’s media formats. seems that blu-ray is losing ground against Toshiba’s HD-DVD format. the study cites Sony’s heavy handedness and it’s delayed and overpriced entry into the market for it’s lack of support. I mentioned this a while ago, but Sony doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to introducing new media formats to market: Betamax, ATRAC, MiniDisc, UMDs and the Memorystick (ok, I’ll give you the memory stick, but its still a shitty format, price per MB is almost double that of SD card memory… way to go Sony.) Otherwise all of the above formats have failed for various reasons, But I’d guess that the biggest reason is that the general public sees Sony as not playing along nicely with everyone else, and viewing HD-DVD as the more open format, especially since they have such a bad track record introducing media formats, and the only “successful” one they’ve had costs almost twice as much as it’s more prominent competitors. Sony, pull your head out.
